I downloaded this dictionary for my wife. She owns the hardcover version of this dictionary, and it is a massive book (almost 3000 pages, and weighs 5.5 pounds). She loves the book. Here is the good news and the bad news about this program. The good news is that you get the whole dictionary, not a shorter version. For this I give five stars, but I will deduct one star because the dictionary is scanned. There is no problem with scanning, but only if it is high resolution. The resolution for this dictionary is medium resolution, which looks a bit blurred in the retina-display Ipad 3 but probably okay in the normal resolution iPad 2. If the app had used double the resolution (i.e. four times the file size), it would be great (and I will give it five stars). Fortunately, despite the medium resolution, you can still see everything, including all accents. The interface is okay. When you look up a word, the entry is highlighted so that your eyes can quickly go to the word. I hope that the software company can give higher resolution scans in an update. Even if they do this, the total size of the app will be only 120mbs, which is not too large by todays standards. Thank-you for a useful book. Ben
This is an extremely important app dictionary that represents what appears to be a transfer to iPad of the entire 2,600-page hard copy dictionary. I have this dictionary in hard copy, and it is among the most comprehensive English-Vietnamese dictionaries that exists. This app essentially provides images of the pages of the physical dictionary, rather different than most iPad electronic dictionaries, but a format I quite like, as it is more book-like. So, it does not get any more comprehensive than this; what about the interface? Here is where this is not ideal. The search screen is just a basic search box and alphabetical list, and hitting search has a few second delay before the relevant page pops up with the relevant word highlighted in your choice of four colors. The words on the page are no hyperlinked, however, so you cannot proceed from the page, except to turn pages like a dictionary. This is not a bad feature, but is also rather sluggish with a hitch in the movement from each page to the next. Still, while the interface is somewhat slow and limited in function, the four stars are for the ability to put this valuable dictionary into this electronic format. With some improvements in speed and especially hyper linking on the pages themselves, this is a true five star app. I cannot wait until (I hope) they release the Vietnamese-English version. I would buy that in a flash!

This dictionary has a good database. Better than Lac Viet
I have used this printed dictionary for years along with Nguyen Van Khons dictionary, and I am glad that it is now offered in the electronic form. One thing made me to hesitate to buy at first was that I could not find any information either on the app info or reviews whether or not this dictionary can be accessible off-line --- but I bought it anyway. Regarding the app, I wish the developer would keep it as simple as it is and improving the speed of searching for word(s) would be helpful indeed. Tôi rất ngưỡng mộ và tri ân công việc soạn thảo quyển tự điển của Viện Ngôn Ngữ Học; đặc biệt là tôi có thể sử dụng off-line. Từ vựng rất phong phú giúp tôi trau giồi lại tiếng Việt mà tôi đã không dùng thường trong gần bốn mươi năm qua.
